INDIAN TIGER. The Indian tiger, also known as the Bengal tiger, is the most common remaining tiger sub-species. It has the classic tiger coat: deep orange fur with white undersides, cheeks and eye areas and of course, the distinctive black stripes, which can vary in shapes and width. These tigers are endangered, largely due to irresponsible recreational hunting, habitat destruction and general human encroachment. By 1972 there were only 1.850 tigers left alive! With recent preservation and conservation programs, the Indian tiger population has gradually increased to about 4.000 animals. This number is still dangerously low but, with continued support, it would provide enough of a genetic base to built a sustainable population in the future. (30cm x 40cm) $199.00 AUD |
